A Journey of Personal and Professional Growth: Laura's Experience in the Netherland

At Niños de Guatemala, we are committed to nurturing the growth and development of our teachers, recognizing that their experiences directly impact the quality of education we provide to our students. Last year, three dedicated educators had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in an exchange program in the Netherlands. Today, we’re thrilled to share Laura’s inspiring journey and the profound insights she gained during her time abroad.

The process of applying for the exchange program began with a heartfelt motivation letter in which Laura articulated her deep desire to embark on this transformative journey. Filled with a sense of curiosity and a thirst for new experiences, Laura poured her passion for teaching into her application, expressing her aspirations and commitments if selected. Despite initial doubts and uncertainties, Laura’s unwavering determination and enthusiasm shone through

Upon learning of her selection for the exchange program, Laura’s excitement soared. Yet, amidst the anticipation, there lingered a sense of apprehension—she was about to embark on a journey into the unknown. Nevertheless, fueled by her adventurous spirit and dedication to personal growth, Laura embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly.

The journey itself was an adventure filled with both challenges and moments of profound discovery. From the lengthy flight to adjusting to a new culture. As she stepped foot in the Netherlands, she was greeted by a world of new experiences and perspectives, eagerly awaiting her exploration.

Throughout her time in the Netherlands, Laura immersed herself fully in the local community, eager to learn from her Dutch counterparts and engage with students in a new cultural context. From observing classes to supporting teachers and interacting with students, Laura embraced every opportunity to broaden her horizons and deepen her understanding of education.


 One of the most impactful aspects of the exchange program was the opportunity to witness firsthand the cultural differences in education and daily life. Laura marveled at the innovative teaching methodologies employed by her Dutch colleagues, as well as the emphasis placed on fostering student autonomy and critical thinking skills.

During her time in the Netherlands, Laura couldn’t help but notice the stark differences in cultural norms, particularly among the students. Accustomed to the warmth and affectionate greetings of her students in Guatemala, Laura found herself missing the daily interactions that brightened her classroom back home. 

In Guatemala, it was common for students to greet her with enthusiastic “good mornings” and inquire about her well-being, creating a welcoming and nurturing environment. However, in the Netherlands, Laura observed a more reserved approach, with fewer spontaneous expressions of affection or inquiries about her day. While she appreciated the unique cultural dynamics and the opportunity to immerse herself in a new educational context, Laura couldn’t help but long for the familiarity and warmth of her students. 

Despite the cultural differences, Laura cherished the memories of her students’ endearing gestures and looked forward to reuniting with them upon her return, carrying with her the invaluable lessons learned from her time abroad.

As her journey drew to a close, Laura reflected on the profound impact of her experiences abroad. While she was eager to reunite with her loved ones back home, she also felt nostalgia for the newfound sense of community she had discovered in the Netherlands, from the picturesque landscapes to the delicious Dutch cuisine.

Returning home brought a mix of emotions for Laura—nostalgia for the memories created abroad, excitement for the opportunity to share her learnings with colleagues and students, and a renewed sense of purpose in her role as an educator. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of international exchanges and the boundless possibilities that await those who dare to step outside their comfort zone.

We are immensely proud of Laura for seizing this opportunity and for the invaluable insights she brings back to our Niños de Guatemala community. Her journey exemplifies the spirit of lifelong learning and the profound impact that immersive experiences can have on personal and professional growth.
