Dear Friends,
March took us all by surprise. As many of you know, due to COVID-19, the guatemalan government took several measures in order to stop the spread of the virus, keep safe as many people as possible and avoid overboarding the health system considering that it does not have a big capacity or advanced technology to cover the needs of significant amounts of people. This is the reason why our office in Antigua Guatemala and our three schools remain closed. As a response to this situation we found alternatives to run the educational activities and the work that was done at our office.
Educational Reinforcement
With the joined efforts of NDG staff and the financial support of our students’ sponsors, we were able to create educational material that was handed out in the past weeks to our students’ parents. This material includes a review of the content the students worked on in January and February with the intention of strengthening skills and knowledge, and an introduction to the content for the next months. NDG is also motivating students to read at home and make use of the educational material the government is broadcasting in national TV channels.
Food and Supplies
Social workers, psychologists, and school principals did an amazing job identifying families that need help the most by reaching out to each and one of them directly. Working with the NDG budget for snacks and your generous donations, we have been able to provide these families with food and supplies. The handout is taking place every 15 days in the schools, where the teachers are working hard organizing and classifying the supplies to give them to the students’ parents. Both groups (staff and parents) are taking the necessary measures to protect themselves and others.
NDG staff in Guatemala and the Netherlands is working hard to get more support and form alliances that allow us to continue giving support to the NDG families.
A warm welcome to NDG
In March we were aiming to find 25 new sponsors through our Sponsorship Campaign, we are very happy to announce that despite the worldwide situation caused by the spread of the COVID-19 out of the 25 sponsors we were looking for, we found 19.
